History Course Content

Summary of Curriculum:

A-Level students at Prince Albert follow the AQA A - Level course, which consists of three separate units designed to enhance their historical understanding in different ways.

Main Topics:

Unit 1: The British Empire, c. 1857 – 1967 (Breadth Study)

In this unit, students will explore issues of change, continuity, cause, and consequence during this period through the following key questions:

  • Why did the British Empire grow and contract?
  • What influenced imperial policy?
  • What role did economic factors play in the development of the British Empire?
  • How did the Empire influence British attitudes and culture?
  • How did indigenous peoples respond to British rule?
  • How significant were the roles of key individuals and groups, and how were they affected by developments?

Unit 3: The Development of Civil Rights in the USA (Coursework)

This unit focuses on a historical investigation that enables students to apply the skills, knowledge, and understanding acquired from the examined components of the curriculum. By undertaking this investigation, students will gain a deeper appreciation of the nature and purpose of history as a discipline and learn how historians work, providing excellent preparation for future university studies.

At the end of Year 12, students will study the key individuals and changes that impacted the development of civil rights in the USA. They will then choose a topic and question for their coursework, conduct research over the summer holidays, and submit their completed work by the February half-term of Year 13.
